I have to admit I lied

Here is where I was when I stopped to text and talk to Berger about my “Check Engine” light. I told him I thought I was close to somewhere I could get the car checked. Clearly that was not the case. This is on the road to Te Anau. Didn’t want him to worry…. I am so sore and achey today. SItting at the Sandfly Cafe. Had fried eggs, grilled tomato, toast with butter and a lovely cup of coffee. Even the backs of my arms are sore. Great feeling. But I am doing very little movement-based activites today. My …

The Milford Track

I can’t even put my experience into words right now. 33.5 miles through seven vegetation zones in four days. To a highest point at 3056 feet over the MacKinnon pass. Traveling and sharing bunk rooms with 39 other people. I need to sleep a long while. Get up and eat some fried eggs, drink good coffee at the Sandfly Cafe. Go through my photos and spend hours writing. But I will say this. The third day of the hike, passing over the MacKinnon Pass, to the Sutherland Falls and ending at Dumpling Hut was one of the most spectacular days …

Te Anau

Last night my little travel clock said it got down to 34degrees F, that’s almost 0degreesC, which is what my sleeping bag is rated for! I woke up to visible breath and a layer of frost on the picnic table. The bag held up well, glad I got it. A few things to do before I catch my ride to the Milford Track. Right now just getting some eggs and coffee at the Sandfly Cafe. Thankfully there are no sandflies around here. I’ve had quite enough of those little guys. Charging my extra camera battery. Obviously playing on the internet. …

Franz Josef and a little sadness

Photos first: Franz Josef glacier is the white streak in the background: and closer: The walk back towards the car on the gravel bed: It seems I have accidentally erased about 75 photos from the totally amazing drive past Lake Hawea. Rrrrr. I know enough about computers to know they are still on the drive, I just don’t know how to find them. Berger to the rescue again, I hope. Off to bed for me. It is 1 degree outside. Good thing I bought that new sleeping bag. I am in the tent tonight. Got some time in the morning …

Wanaka to Queenstown to Te Anau

I lucked out at the hostel in Wanaka called Wanaka Bakpaka. I paid for a bed in three-bed share room and had it all to myself. Took a shower (I do that still, just not every day!). Exhausted, I hung out in the common area just a little bit, waiting for my hair to dry. Wrote a post that erased itself, due to lack of disk space. Bugger. Too tired to work on pictures or do anything else, I turned in early-ish. Still slept in until 9, despite my alarm clock going off at 7am. I guess I am just …
